The rules regarding civilians clearly state, "Civilian jobs are non-combatant with the exception of: - Sheriff - MC&D Associate - MC&D Sales Specialist". Reporter is not included in this list, which was the job you were on, meaning you would be held to the non-combatant self-defense rules. As for a realistic situation, I highly doubt that a reporter who has broken into a highly secret facility would take it upon themselves to murder a heavily armed man with a DMR when said man was simply trying to cuff them.
