Lore Name: Dodo

Rank: AR

SCP: 173

Question/Idea: If a piece of 173 is separated from the sculpture itself, will looking at that piece count as looking at 173?

Background Research: SCP 173 is a sculpture comprised of concrete and rebar. SCP 173 is animate when not being viewed by a living entity. When animate, SCP 173 is hostile and will move at high speeds and attack any nearby humans by snapping the neck at the base of the skull. Note that blinking counts as not looking at SCP 173 and will cause it to become animate if no one else is looking.

Hypothesis: If a piece of SCP 173 is separated from it and someone looks at the separated piece it will count as looking at SCP 173 and will stop it from becoming animate. If true this could be used to stop SCP 173 during containment breaches without having to get close to it.

Observations (What Happened During Test): A concrete sample was removed from 173 with a chisel without incident. All personnel evacuated the containment chamber with the exception of D-8172. D-8172 was blindfolded and left inside the containment chamber. In order to determine whether or not SCP 173 can still move and terminate the D class while the concrete sample is being viewed. 3 personnel (one researcher and two gensec.) were viewing the concrete sample and warning each other when blinking in order to keep eye contact with it at all times. The shutters on the windows were closed, breaking line of sight on 173. Despite the personnel maintaining eye contact with the concrete sample, a loud crack with immediately heard from the containment chamber. The shutters were opened revealing 173 standing over the corpse of D-8172. The cause of death was confirmed to be a snapped neck at the base the of the skull.

Evidence/Visual Stimuli: N/A (Recording software died again I need to fix that)

Analysis / Conclusion (What Could Of Caused The Results): It seems that viewing a piece of SCP 173 that is separated from the statue itself does not count as looking at SCP 173. While using a much larger piece of SCP 173 or even bisecting it might work, the risk of terminating SCP 173 or even creating multiple animate instances of SCP 173 is too great. For now it appears that only directly viewing the statue itself counts as looking at SCP 173.

Was Your Hypothesis Correct?: No, viewing severed portions of SCP 173 does not count as looking at it.
