Until next time...
Gaminglight will be shutting down in December 2024. Another company will be purchasing various assets from us with no intent of continuing the Garry’s Mod servers. I love everything this community has done over the past 12 years of its existence. The community that we built has some of the best people that I have come in contact with over my short life. I wish nothing but the best for everyone that has played our servers over the years and will see you all very soon :)
The main official discord for Gaminglight will stay active (we will disable invites soon) and the others will be locked from future messaging. We remove anyone instantly that causes any issues with no option to appeal. Forums and all other sites will be locked and inaccessible. The teamspeak will be taken down and I suggest using the main discord for any communication with old Gaminglight friends.
Gaminglight was founded out of a love for coding and the belief that I could bring unique value to the Garry’s Mod space. Over the years, our team built one of the most respected and impactful communities in Garry’s Mod, fostering countless lifelong friendships. Some of the best years of my life were spent talking and working with amazing people each day, an experience I would never trade for anything else. Gaminglight became a refuge for many players, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a space to escape and find solace. I’ve received heartfelt messages from players sharing how our community helped them through their darkest times, even saving lives. These stories remain a powerful reminder of the impact Gaminglight had on its players and fueled our determination to continue pushing the boundaries of what we could achieve.
The current Garry’s Mod ecosystem has seen a rise in botting practices, particularly from Russian servers, which has diluted the player experience. Many top servers now rely on artificial player counts instead of focusing on meaningful development. Additionally, the broad approach many servers take to niches often hinders focused development tailored to specific player needs. Compounding this are declining player numbers from American audiences, which have shifted community dynamics.
Operating Gaminglight came with significant personal and professional hurdles. Many players and community members underestimated the financial and time costs involved, from development and legal expenses to hosting and management. There was often a lack of appreciation for the tireless work required to maintain and improve the servers. It was common to work until early morning hours to release updates or address critical issues, only to face criticism from those who didn’t recognize the effort involved. The role also came with constant availability, with technical problems frequently arising in the middle of the night or during vacations. Malicious behavior, such as threats against myself and my family or players attempting to disrupt the community through DDoS attacks, further added to the stress. The toll on my mental health was significant despite the clear positive impact our servers had on so many lives.
For those aspiring to create their own servers, there are lessons to be learned from this journey. It is crucial to define your niche early and focus your development on the players who align with it. This clarity prevents wasted effort and helps maintain direction. Protecting the community’s culture is equally vital. Disruptive individuals should be removed swiftly, even if they are popular, as their presence can harm the broader community. Simplifying systems and iterating quickly often proves more effective than overcomplicating updates. Players tend to value functionality over complexity, and a fast, flexible development approach keeps engagement high. Finally, be selective about whose advice you take. Many critics lack the experience or knowledge to offer valuable insights. Instead, trust those with proven credentials, as their perspectives often highlight that you are doing better than you might think.
Gaminglight’s journey was both rewarding and challenging, leaving me with countless memories and invaluable lessons. It stands as a testament to the power of passion, persistence, and the ability of a dedicated team to create something truly impactful. To those following a similar path, I wish you the strength and vision to build something just as meaningful.
- Daniel Haynes (Zeeptin), Founder of Gaminglight
Over 500,000 players have connected to our servers throughout the past 12 years.
Our servers frequently ranked among the top 10 worldwide, with all three active servers hitting that mark for more than a week at a time.
Gaminglight was one of the first communities to partner with a child exploitation reporting agency, leading efforts to prevent abuse and protect children on Garry’s Mod and Discord.
We launched a wide variety of servers over the years—some that players loved, and some that they didn’t, but each contributed to the Gaminglight legacy.
We built a community founded on respect, removing individuals quickly if they disrespected our players—no matter how much they spent on Gaminglight.
Manager & Map Maker
Someone who I sincerely consider one of my closest friends. Your ability to pick up new skills and reveal hidden talents in yourself will always amaze me. You are by far the best map maker that Garry’s Mod has to offer, and I am so glad that you chose us, Gaminglight, to help all these years. Your management skills are some which I think Fortune 500 companies would be lucky to have. You have always given insightful, intelligent judgment on situations that we found ourselves in. Beckett, I know you will go far in your life, and I am so glad to have spent all these years working alongside you.
Manager
I wish you got a chance to manage during the prime of Gaminglight because your ideas and work ethic would have improved our community so much. I think a very valuable skill that you possess is switching from fun to serious very quickly. We would frequently joke around, but when it was time to discuss something pertaining to work or the servers, you instantly followed suit. Thank you for all the hard work you did for the servers (not just PoliceRP) when you were fighting an uphill battle all along.
Long-time Supporter
I believe that you saw something in us at Gaminglight that you didn’t see in any other community. Thank you for your never-ending support of this amazing community over the past few years. Without you, a lot of the updates that were done on the servers would not have been possible. You are a stand-up guy who was always understanding and great to talk to.
Manager
One of the best managers that SCPRP ever saw. I truly believe if you were manager from the beginning, we could have done even better things with the server than what we already did. You were always so easy to work with and talk to, which made working with you a joy. I remember countless times where you and I were up until 4–5 AM in the morning to get an update out before the morning restart.
Manager
Another manager that I wish worked with us since the beginning. Jayden, you are a very intelligent person who always brought a lot to our team. Thank you for always putting the servers first and being such a great leader for our team. Also, thanks for sticking around TeamSpeak and checking in with all of us even after leaving your manager position!
Manager
I give you props, man! Your role as manager was never easy. We were constantly trying to fight against the decrease in Garry’s Mod population and the decrease in PoliceRP gamemode population as a whole. We were making a lot of changes that had a 50/50 split of people loving them/people hating them, and I think you handled a lot of that the best you could. Thank you for staying up with me late at night planning until we were 100% confident in what we wanted to do for an update/change. I always admired your work ethic and communication skills you brought to our team.
Manager
Working with you for many years was very refreshing. I believe both of us were at similar stages of our lives, and we could communicate on a different level that some of the other guys couldn’t. You were always very laid-back and could see different perspectives when addressing issues we encountered on PoliceRP, making our decision-making process a lot more thought out.
Senior Management Team
I really think you always had the best interest of the servers at heart. You always volunteered to do the jobs people didn’t want to do, even after SCPRP closed. We were always very lucky to have you as a part of the team. Thank you for all you have done for this community.
Senior Management Team
Thank you for helping Gaminglight for all these years. I enjoyed the dinner that we had back in September and how we were able to laugh about some good times that we had created for the community and its players. I envy the amount of passion you bring to conversations about everything. You are someone I can see myself remaining friends with over the years. Thank you for all you did over the 7–8 years you were here.
Senior Management Team
I genuinely loved how passionate you were about Gaminglight. I think we had different management styles that did not make for a good team, but I can admire the hard work that you did for the servers. I wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors.
Community Members
There are really so many other people that I believe were a huge impact on Gaminglight that I could not possibly name all of them. Whether you left a good or bad impression on Gaminglight and its players, I believe you allowed us to grow and make Gaminglight a better place for future players. I wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors.
Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey. We hope to see you again, somewhere, someday.
