Surges Discord ban appeal

Surge

Recommended Posts

Discord Name:  Surge

Discord ID: Surge #3900

Date of Ban: 1/15/2021

Reason for Ban: Pinging the big man himself Zeeptin

Dispute: So I just woke up an thought it would've been funny to ping both the cheetaman Igneous an Zeeptin himself , for my very long time I've been with GL an stayed here never knew it was a bannable offense to ping the owner (Never saw it anywhere or read it anywhere)  All it was just a harmless joke and it wont happen again just wanted to have fun in the command channel an see if i would get a meme back wasnt expecting a perma ban

Not pinging SMT is kind of just common knowledge, but Surge is a good guy and I don't think he would ever repeat it.

I dont think a perma-ban was necessary for this, a slap on the wrist, maybe a warn or something, but a ban should be reserved for severe offences. posting explicit content, extreme and unnecessary comments, stuff like that. a ping in a channel should not be equal to this sort of content.

I think its kinda stupid for people to get banned perm for this i think its better to give them a week ban first time they do it then a perm after

or even a mute but perm ban is 2 much

+ Support I didn't even know it was a bannable offense, if he won't do it again then I suggest 1wk rather than perma. Perma is excessive in this case, seems like he was just trying to meme.

I get not wanting to be tagged, but come on.

You see, it really is so simple. Permanently banning a command member because of a ping is petty and makes the server look bad. Engaging with your own community would only increase morale and the promotion of the server.

How to not get pinged 101: https://gyazo.com/b2d82d578ff806cbb8f86c87c3a4e4a3

You see if you just adjusted your settings, people could ping you all they want x999999999 times and you'll never get a single notification from them.

It's almost like the Discord Engineers knew what they were doing when they made a community based communications platform.

Yes reading the rules is needed, but the point is being perma banned for a ping is just nonsense, like Kyrinian said ,reserve it for severe cases. The fact you have to say "I wont ever do it again" shows a blatant disconnect between owner and the community, which is not good. +support a discord mute would've been fine

Why should it vary on the person? I've seen many people ping SMT without it even being acknowledged, but when surge does it he gets banned (For a first time offense) It should either be everyone who pings SMT will be banned or No one who pings SMT should be banned.

Seems a warn or a mute would have sufficed instead of a ban, it wasn’t done with malicious intent, merely just fun. Even though it is in violation of the rules and he should have known, it still feels a little harsh.

Although yes, it was dumb to ping and it is against the rules, I don't believe that permanently banning someone for being dumb once is necessary.  Should've been a warn, as that's what we usually do in the main server. I don't remember having to ban someone over pinging Zeeptin once in the main discord, always a warn.

Forgot to add my two cents:

Yes it was pretty stupid, as well as bother the owner who kinda has really important things to do. I feel talking to him and telling him to never do it again would be better, this seems very harsh. I may not get along with Surge but I feel with who he is talking with him would've done better than a ban. I'm always open to other opinions as well.

This is a ridiculous statement. I've issued countless bans to people that have pinged SMT members and Zeeptin alike. There's a difference between pinging someone for a specific reason, or doing it to screw around and "be funny". Secondly, it's literally a rule in the discord not to tag SMT members. A blatant rule violation results in a punishment, same as literally every other rule violation.

Had he just pinged Igneous, sure, a week long ban may have been in order. But Igenous and Zeeptin shows exceedingly poor judgement.

This is another post that shows the lack of understanding of how SMT have to have their stuff set up for different situations. We can't blanketly set ourselves to not receive pings at all for the times that the pings may be necessary. For example, I'm routinely pinged in a variety of channels across the discords to answer different questions in the MOTD. If I set myself to suppress all pings, all of these people won't have their questions answered. It's similar across the entire SMT team. Trust me, we're well aware of how to set our ping permissions, but it's because we do engage with the community that we don't set them suppress all pings.

Plus, Zeeptin was the one who issued the ban, not one of our other moderators.

You see, it really is so simple. Command doesn't have extra privileges like pinging SMT and EMT.you can't engage with the community when constantly trying to keep it going.

What happens when you ping the owner instead of not doing it

You see if you just follow the rules people won't get banned and you won't have to make a bunch of excuses for them

Its almost like people can read and follow the rules when they play on a community

Someone got perm banned from the Clone wars Life RP server for pinging Zeeptin.

I'm sorry but if it was Zeeptin who banned you I see a very minimal chance that you get unbanned

Rule 5. Do not tag SMT.

Not only that, but you pinged Zeeptin. Like why would you wake up and think that's funny to do?

There is a reason why you don't see this incidents happen often, hell I'd go as far to say the only people who can ping Zeeptin are SMT themselves.

Also you got banned by Zeeptin, odds are against you.
